OLD MASTERS RETURNS TO JANUARY

New York – For the first time since 2016, Christie’s is proud to present a week of Old Master sales in January, comprising four live auctions, 25-27 January, at Rockefeller Plaza, and an online sale, 23-31January. The week begins 25 January with two sales: Remastered: Old Masters from the Collection of J.E. Safra - Selling Without Reserve in the morning and a strong various-owner sale of Old Masters in the afternoon. Works on paper will take centerstage on 26 January with Old Master & British Drawings. The series of live auctions will end in spectacular fashion with an exciting group of works ranging from sculpture, to furniture, to painting, Modern Medici: Masterpieces from a New York Collection. At the same time, collectors will have the opportunity to acquire a wide range of objects offered in Old Master Paintings and Sculpture Online, which runs from 23 to 31 January.
REMASTERED: OLD MASTERS FROM THE COLLECTION OF J.E. SAFRA - SELLING WITHOUT RESERVE: Spanning four centuries of artistic excellence, this sale represents a fantastic opportunity to acquire exquisite works at more accessible prices. Highlights include, Joos Van Cleve’s Portrait of a gentleman holding gloves, half-length (estimate: $1,000,000-1,500,000); an extraordinary bound group of drawings by Jean-Baptiste Oudry for the famous Fables of Jean de La Fontaine (estimate: $1,500,000-2,500,000); a Caravaggist rendering of Lute players with an angel by Pietro Paolini (estimate: $500,000-700,000); and Gustave Courbet’s Le Guitarrero (estimate: $500,000-700,000).
OLD MASTERS: This various-owner sale features pictures by some of the greatest artists in history including, Francisco de Goya’s Portrait of Doña María Vicenta Barruso Valdés and Portrait of her mother Doña Leonora Antonia Valdés de Barruso (estimate: $15,000,000-20,000,000), pictured above; Pieter Brueghel the Younger’s Kermesse of Saint George (estimate: $2,500,000-3,500,000); Canaletto’s Rialto Bridge, Venice, from the south with an embarkation from the Paul G. Allen Collection (estimate: $2,500,000-3,500,000); a newly rediscovered work by Antoine Watteau, Le Pèlerinage a l’Ile de Cythère, which is related to his masterpiece, The Embarkation to Cythera, in the Louvre in Paris (estimate: $2,500,000-3,500,000); and Joseph Mallord William Turner’s view of Pope’s Villa at Twickenham (estimate: $4,000,000-6,000,000).
MODERN MEDICI: MASTERPIECES FROM A NEW YORK COLLECTION: A jewel-like group of masterpieces of painting, sculpture and furniture that includes, a magnificent Italian ormolu, white marble and semiprecious hardstone-inlaid center table, the top attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli (Estimate on Request: In excess of $1,200,000); The Cesarini Venus, Attributed Antonio Susini, from a model by Giambologna (estimate: $1,000,000-1,500,000); A Bronze Figure Of An Écorché Man cast from a model by Willem Danielsz. Van Tetrode (estimate: $800,000-1,200,000); and Pieter Claesz’ An overturned silver tazza, a partly peeled lemon and an olive on a silver plate (estimate: $800,000-1,200,000).
OLD MASTER & BRITISH DRAWINGS features a wide selection of works from the 16th to the 19th Centuries by Italian, French, Northern and British draftsmen. Headlining the sale is an important, newly discovered sheet by Federico Zuccaro (estimate: $30,000-50,000) for the decoration of the Villa Caprarola, as well as a complete series of twenty drawings on vellum by the Netherlandish artist Johannes Wierix (estimate: $150,000-250,000).
OLD MASTER PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURE ONLINE will feature works spanning five centuries of European artistic production. Highlights of the sale include a tromp l’oiel of hunting and birding gear by Anthonie Leemans (estimate: $50,000-70,000), as well as a selection of maiolica, recently restituted to the heirs of Fritz Gutmann, a banker and avid collector of Renaissance art.
