Christie's Presents American Abstraction

LOS ANGELES – Christie’s presents American Abstraction, a private selling exhibition open at Christie’s Los Angeles Gallery between April 22 – May 21.
American Abstraction highlights works by abstract painters prominent during the eventful artistic period from the 1950s to 1970s in America. With its unique boldness and brash sense of bravado, American abstraction was the dominant force in postwar and contemporary art for over half a century. Advocating the gesture and spontaneity above figurative concerns, proponents of this new art form have given us some of the most radical and intoxicating works of art by disrupting the conventions of the past.
Characterized by the innovative deployment of color and form, and the introduction of new processes such as staining, artists including Sam Gilliam, Peter Bradley, Morris Louis, and Vivian Springford focused purely on the inherent nature of painting itself. The selection of artists comprises members and pioneers of revolutionary schools of paintings begun in the major hubs of New York and Washington D.C. Unfettered by the traditions of Europe, and abandoning the constraints of easel painting, these radically different artists championed their new techniques to unleash the full power of their expressive forms.
