Cultured Legacy: Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy from the Chang Shiu Sig and Tung Shui Wah Collection

22 Nov – 6 Dec

HONG KONG – Christie’s Hong Kong is delighted to showcase an extraordinary selection of Chinese paintings, thoughtfully curated over centuries by some of the world's most respected private collectors, through two sales: the Fine Chinese Modern and Contemporary Ink Paintings on 1 December; and the Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy on 2 December. These exceptional private collections, with their excellent provenance, feature works by iconic masters from the classical era through to modern and contemporary times.

Underlining Christie's remarkable success and expertise in presenting distinguished single-owner private collections, this season, Christie’s Hong Kong is privileged to present the second installment of the Liu Jing Xiu Tang Collection of Chinese Paintings, following the sensational sale hosted in May 2013.  The collection comprises 21 fresh-to-the-market Modern and Classical Chinese paintings from the illustrious industrialist and textile giant of modern China, Mr. Liu Kuo Chun (1887-1978). The leading highlights of this distinguished collection include Heavy Snow on a Mountain Pass by Zhang Daqian (estimate: HK$15,000,000 – 20,000,000, centre pictured above), a piece showcasing the artist's deep traditional skills and reverence for the classical tradition, set to be offered in the Fine Chinese Modern and Contemporary Ink Paintings sale; and Replanted Wutong Studio by Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799, Reigned 1736-1796; estimate: HK$3,000,000 – 5,000,000, pictured on the right), a magnificent painting inscribed with 20 of the Emperor’s own compositions, which will separately be offered in the Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy sale.

In addition to the above, the Fine Chinese Modern and Contemporary Ink Paintings sale on 1 December, consisting of over 200 masterpieces, also features several other notable private collections around the globe, including The Collection of Sir William G. Ehrman, represented by  the splendid and rare Wu Guanzhong’s A Hill City (estimate: HK$6,000,000 – 8,000,000, pictured above on the right). This work perfectly demonstrates Wu Guanzhong’s enthusiasm for transitioning from oil to ink painting in the late 1970s, and it appears on the market for the first time in 40 years. After the resounding success of the non-selling exhibition in May 2023, another not-to-be-missed  collection, The Foh Collection of Chinese Paintings, enters the auction stage, featuring 20 masterworks this season. Highlights include Zhang Daqian’s hanging scroll, ink and colour on paper Waterfall (estimate: HK$3,500,000 – 5,500,000), and Xu Beihong’s Two Ducks (estimate: HK$2,000,000 – 3,000,000); along with important artworks by Huang Binhong, Zhao Shao’ang and more. Other highlights include Wu Guanzhong's A Village of the Zhuang People in Guangxi; Zhang Daqian's Lotus in Rain and Lady; and Pu Ru's Album of Landscapes from the Wintry Jade Studio.

The Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy sale on 2 December presents an array of nearly 130 widely-published, fresh-to-the-market paintings and calligraphy works with impeccable provenance, spanning from the 8th to the 19th centuries. Leading masterpieces include Yellow Peonies by Shitao (estimate: HK$13,000,000-18,000,000, pictured above on the left), which records the life and stories of the Jiangnan literati, epitomising the fusion of poetry and painting; and Chen Chun's Narcissus and Calligraphy (estimate: HK$8,000,000 – 12,000,000), boasting an astonishing provenance - appraised and inscribed by Dong Qichang (1555-1636) and Qian Qianyi (1582-1664) in late Ming dynasty; collected and sealed by Yang Jin (1644-1728) in early Qing dynasty; acquired by Liang Jingshi (1809-1859) in late Qing dynasty. Other notable works include Bada Shanren's Calligraphy and Grapevine; and Zhu Yunming's Cursive Script Calligraphy.

Separately, from 22 November to 6 December, a dedicated single-owner online sale titled “Cultured Legacy: Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy from the Chang Shiu Sig and Tung Shui Wah Collection” will take place, making the debut in the auction market of this collection. The Chang Shiu Sig and Tung Shui Wah Collection, comprising 100 paintings and calligraphic works, was meticulously curated by Dr. Chang Shiu Sig (1919-2012), a renowned dermatologist and graduate of the National Sun Yat-sen University, and his wife, Ms. Tung Shui Wah (1928-2020), one of Pu Ru’s four female disciples in Hong Kong. Divided into three main parts, the collection embodies the couple's life history and refined taste. It includes 40 works gifted to Dr. Chang by prominent Hong Kong and Guangdong artists, numerous drafts by Pu Ru for Wenjia's study, as well as a selection of works from the Ming and Qing dynasties and renowned 20th-century artists.

Kim Yu, Chairman of Chinese Paintings Department, Christie’s Asia Pacific remarked: “We are thrilled to present our Autumn Season, featuring an array of esteemed private collections that have been meticulously curated from live auctions to online sale. The sale series uniquely combines fresh-to-market paintings and calligraphy works by highly sought-after icons, representing the pinnacle of Chinese paintings across the ages. These works come with exceptional provenance, reflecting our commitment to bringing the finest art to the market and captivating collectors from all generations. We look forward to welcoming collectors and art enthusiasts around the world to share in the legacy and passion embedded in these collections.”
