CHRISTIE’S ANNOUNCES SPRING DESIGN AUCTION

NEW YORK – This June, Christie’s is pleased to present its upcoming Design sale; a curated assemblage of important and rare designs by preeminent artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, sold through a live auction at Christie’s Rockefeller Center on June 8th.


The auction is led by masterworks from Claude Lalanne, including a masterful ‘Structure Végétale’ Chandelier (estimate $1,000,000-1,500,000), an extraordinary ‘Ginkgo’ Dining Suite and the celebrated ‘Crocodile’ series of seating, showcasing a settee from 2013 (estimate $1,000,000-1,500,000) as well as two Crocoseats from 2008 (estimate $180,000-220,000, each); in addition to the rare ‘Hosta’ Mirror (estimate $500,000 – 700,000), among others.


The auction offers an exploration of celebrated French designer Jean Royère’s work, highlighted by his 1950s rare ‘Sculpture’ Suite from a Private Californian Collection, (sofa estimate $300,000 – 500,000) (pair of armchairs estimate $300,000 – 500,000) and several rare designs from the Collection of Norah and Norman Stone, including a rare ‘Corbeille’ Floor Lamp (estimate $100,000-150,000).


The sale also features an exceptional group from A Century of Art: The Gerald Fineberg Collection, led by the Important ‘Menhir Della Vita’ by Ettore Sottsass from 1966 (estimate $200,000-300,000), along with many spectacular ceramics by Lucie Rie and Hans Coper.


Iconic designs by Alberto and Diego Giacometti will be highlighted, including a plaster ‘Oiseau’ (estimate $200,000 - 300,000), Property from the Estate of Jerry Ganz, and a rare ‘Calabash’ Table Lamp in a polished alabaster (estimate $100,000 – 150,000). The artists’ sculpture design is also represented with Alberto’s ‘Grande Feuille’ Floor Lamp (estimate $300,000 - 500,000), Property from the Collection of Ms. Odyssia Skouras, Diego’s ‘X’ Form Stools, Troisième Version’ (estimate $200,000- 300,000), and his impressive ‘Grecque’ Low Table (estimate $250,000- 350,000).


The French Art Deco chapter features a superb carpet by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, and great designs by Jean Dunand, Armand Albert Rateau and Claudius Linossier. Contemporary Design is represented through works by Judy McKie, Philippe Anthonioz, Ingrid Donat, Wendell Castle and Ron Arad.


American mastery in glass making is illustrated by a great series of windows by Frank Lloyd Wright Studio for the Jay Morton House, several exceptional table lamps by Tiffany Studios, such as a vibrant ‘Fruit’ Table Lamp (estimate $250,000-350,000), a rare 'Pony Wisteria’ (estimate $200,000-300,000) and a spectacular ‘Elaborate Peony’ Table Lamp on ‘Arch and Leaf’ base (estimate $250,000-350,000). A rare ‘Diatreta’ Vase by Fredrick Carder from 1957 and Tiffany Studios important and rare ‘Morning Glory’ Paperweight Vase exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1914 further distinguish this section. Later in June Christie’s will also be selling a large selection of Tiffany Studios from the Ann and Gordon Getty Collection. The collection will be sold over one live auction in New York – taking place on June 14, and two online sales ending on June 15.
These important designs are on public preview at Christie’s Galleries - 20 Rockefeller Plaza from 2-7 June 2023. The live sale will take place at Rockefeller Center on Thursday 8 June 2023 at 11am.
