Paris - On November 16, Christie's Paris presented the second sale of Classic Week, Derniers Souvenirs de Ferrières, bringing together over 200 lots from the collection of James de Rothschild, totalling €3,097,458, 3 times the pre-sale estimate. It was one of the last opportunities for collectors to acquire a small piece of Rothschild's taste, through a very eclectic diversity of objects, and at very attractive estimates. Les Greniers de Ferrières sale, online until November 21, offers the very last chance to be a guardian of their style.
From the collections of the family of Baron Robert de Rothschild, the painting Renaud abandonne Armide by Charles-Antoine Coypel (1694-1752), which was offered in the Maitres Anciens sale for a total of €1,550,430, achieved the highest result of the sale at €352,800.
The highlight of the Derniers Souvenirs de Ferrières sale was also a superb miniature, never seen on the market: a bodycolour, heightened with gold, on vellum by Noël Bellemare and Jean Clouet depicting François Ier, surrounded by his court, receiving a work by its author, acquired for €453,600, 10 times its pre-sale estimate.
Another miniature, by Jean Decourt, depicting Catherine de Médicis surrounded by her sons Charles IX and Henry III and her daughters-in-law Elisabeth d'Autriche and Louise de Vaudémont, was pre-empted by the Musée Condé in Chantilly, and purchased for €22,680.
" With today's superb results - 68% of lots sold above their high estimate - we can once again attest the strength of the provenance for collectors. The Rothschild taste still has a long life ahead of it, and finds its place in interiors in which a taste for the old and refinement blend marvelously with modern comfort.." Lionel Gosset, Director of the Collections Department
