Katharine Arnold, Co-Head, Post-War and Contemporary Art, Europe: “Tonight’s exceptional results were a fitting tribute to Jeremy Lancaster and his private passion for art, who collected with a strong personal taste as well as a keen eye for paintings. We were thrilled with the depth of international bidding as the art world congregated in London, with registered bidders coming from 26 countries across 4 continents. Highlights of the sale included Philip Guston’s Language I (£3,838,250), Bridget Riley’s Orphean Elegy 7 (£2,831,250) and Josef Albers’ Study for Homage to the Square: Red Tetrachord (£1,631,250). The near complete retrospective survey of Howard Hodgkin’s painting performed well, particularly Bombay Sunset (£731,250) and Lawson, Underwood & Sleep (£611,250).”
