Tim Schmelcher, Head of the Prints Department, King Street, commented: “We are extremely pleased with the results of this sale, which once again confirmed our leading position in the field of Old Master Prints. We are particularly happy about the price realised by the large, early mezzotint by Prince Rupert of the Rhine, ‘The Great Executioner with the head of Saint John the Baptist’, 1658, which more than doubled its pre-sale estimate after a bidding battle between six clients on the telephone and in the room. The result demonstrates the great, international demand for the rarest and finest prints and Christie’s ability to source such unusual and important works.” |
