London – Christie’s is offering a selection of works in two online-only sales of Prints and Multiples, open for bidding until 16 March. Prints & Multiples showcases editions by leading 20th century modern masters including Pablo Picasso, Lucian Freud, Andy Warhol and Joan Miró, while Contemporary Edition: London will celebrate cutting edge editions by leading contemporary artists of the late 20th century and sought-after new talents working in the present day. A focal point of Prints and Multiples is a group of seven prints by Lucian Freud. In stark contrast to the detached quality found in his depictions of humans, these highlight the artist’s great affinity for dogs. Eli (2002, estimate: £60,000-80,000) and Pluto (1988, estimate: £60,000-80,000), illustrate that the artist’s muses were a true revision of the elements that characterised his daily life.
Leading the Prints and Multiples sale online is Pablo Picasso’s Buste de femme d'après Cranach le Jeune (1958, estimate: £400,000-600,000), from the same collection as Picasso’s La femme au tambourin, offered in our 20th / 21st Century: London Evening Sale on 28 February 2023. This graphic work was conceived in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II. Further highlights include Henri Matisse’s large format lithograph Grande Odalisque à culotte bayadère (1925, estimate: £200,000-300,000), crafted by his bold use of juxtaposed pattern and texture.
Andy Warhol’s Marilyn (black version) (1988, estimate: £180,000-250,000) Goethe, and Muhammed Ali lead the Pop Art section, which also includes the artist’s celebrated portraits of Queen Elizabeth II and Mick Jagger.
In addition, a selection of prints by Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson from the John and Gilda McGarry Collection is led by The Road from Arras to Bapaume (1918, estimate: £12,000-18,000), one of the finest images Nevinson produced as an official war artist on the Western Front, which has been described as ‘a powerful and enduring anti-war image’.
