OLD MASTER WEEK

New York – Following a spectacular series of January sales that totaled more than $62 million, Christie’s is proud to present the spring edition of Old Masters Week. The cycle begins on 24 May at 4 p.m. EDT, with the second installment of Remastered: Old Masters from the Collection of J.E. Safra - Selling Without Reserve, and concludes the following morning – 25 May – at 10 a.m. EDT, with the seasonal Old Masters various-owner sale. This series offers collectors and connoisseurs the opportunity to acquire works from the Renaissance to the 19th century, with pictures at all price levels. Explore the sales of Old Master Week in person at our Rockefeller Center galleries in New York on 20–24 May.

REMASTERED: OLD MASTERS FROM THE COLLECTION OF J.E. SAFRA - SELLING WITHOUT RESERVE:

The second sale of works from this collection showcases paintings from the Baroque through to the
19th Century. Highlights include, Gustave Courbet’s Castle of Chillon (Château de Chillon), Angelica
Kauffman’s Penelope awakened by Euryclea, and Jan Brueghel II’s Landscape with a windmill, figures and
houses. The selection traverses the Dutch Golden Age with images of music-makers from Eglon Hendrick van
der Neer and Pieter de Hooch, and landscapes by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Hubert Robert and Adrien Manglard.
There is also a fantastic range of 19th century paintings with artists including Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot,
Harald Sohlberg, and Philippe Rousseau. Selling without reserve, the works are united in their accessibility and
universal appeal in theme and price.

OLD MASTERS:

Works from half a millennium of western art come together in a strong various-owner sale. Headlining the lots is
Giuseppe Vermiglio’s Caravaggesque interpretation of Christ before Pilate. Additional highlights include Jacob
Isaacsz. van Ruisdael’s The tower of Kostverloren on the river Amstel, and Marten van Cleve’s early
composition, Interior of a farmhouse with a wet nurse. British art is also well represented with works by Benjamin
West, Tilly Kettle and Nathaniel Dance-Holland. Rounding out the sale is a wonderful selection of floral still lives
from Balthasar van der Ast, capricci by Giovanni Paolo Panini and Pierre-Antoine Patel, as well as portraits
across the centuries by Lucas Cranach the Younger, Nicolas de Largilliere and Louis Leopold Boilly.
