Geneva – Christie’s Autumn 2021 Luxury sale week concluded on 16 November with the closure of our Watches Online: The Geneva Edit, bringing the total for all 5 auctions to just under CHF90 million (not including the Charity Auction ONLY WATCH). Christie’s offered in its live and online sales 1,160 lots which sold for a combined sell through rate of 93% . During the week Christie’s welcomed a total of 1,900 registrants of which 20% were new to Christie’s. 15 lots sold for above CHF 1 Million and 65% for above their individual estimates. Registrants came from 37 countries, 5 continents.

Christie’s week of auction kicked off with the most prestigious charity auction in the world of Luxury ONLY WATCH. Its 9th edition offered 53 lots which raised CHF 30 million, including a generous private donation of CHF260,000. The sale room was packed by with suspense and willingness to support this great cause, in support of DUCHENNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY RESEARCH.
Each watch created especially for Only Watch 2021 sold and contributed to the final result with 5 timepieces surpassing the 1 million barrier: PATEK PHILIPPE – CHF9.5MILLION, F.P.JOURNE – CHF4.5MILLION, AUDEMARS PIGUET – CHF 3.1MILLION, RICHARD MILLE – CHF2.1MILLION, AND DE BETHUNE X KARI VOUTILAINEN – CHF1.3MILLION.
FINE AND RARE WINES AND SPIRITS 7 November 2021
A 520 lot strong sale achieved a total of CHF 3,242,930 and was sold 94% by lot and 98% by value. The top lot of the auction was lot 400, consisting of an exquisite 107 bottles Yquem Verticale from 1900 to 2016, selling for CHF269,500 The auction set a new world auction record for Chateau Latour, when lot 294 sold for CHF 134,750 for 3 bottles of the 1961 1er cru classé, especially released from the Chateau for this auction , price per bottle CHF 44,916 ( previous record price at auction was US$38400 /Mg in 2011 at Christie’s). Further new auction record prices were set for:
- Chateau Yquem 1908 at US$6,611/bt | previous record price at auction US$3,936/bt in 2017
- Chatau Yquem 1947 at US$8,814 /bt | previous record price at auction US$8,260/bt in 2005
- Domaine Rene Engel Clos Vougeot 1999 at US$3,853/bt | previous record price at auction US$3,140 /bt in 2021
- Domaine JL Chave Hermitage 1990 Magnums at US$6,609/Mg | previous record price at auction US$5,139 USD/Mg in 2021
RARE WATCHES 8 November 2021
120 timepieces sold 100% by lot and 192% above low estimate in 3 hours and 20 minutes. Over 700 participants from 26 countries showed an evenly strong interest in the offering as during our May 2021 watch sale. The November auction totalled CHF 22.8 million.
The top lot was Patek Philippe Ref. 2523, two crown world time, achieved CHF 2,670,000. Property of a gentleman, this extremely fine and highly important Patek Philippe is the first example of a 18k gold two crown world-time wristwatch with 24-hour indication and first time seen waved guilloché gold centre. The most expensive Rolex Deep Sea Special N°1 sold this season in Geneva at Christie’s, achieving a final price of CHF 1,890,000. This watch is understood to have made history, attached to the hull of Auguste Piccard's bathyscaphe Trieste (3,150m) in 1953 and was considered the ultimate Rolex Oyster Case
MAGNIFICENT JEWELS 9 November 2021
Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction achieved a total of CHF53,661,500, with 11 lots selling above a million and 93% of lots sold. The auction saw global participation from 32 countries, across 4 continents.
The historic diamonds owned by Marie-Antoinette, the last Queen of France, which passed through the family by descent for the next 250 years led the auction. The jewels, made by Boehmer in 1776, attracted bidding from the room and telephones, achieved CHF7,459,000 / $8,203,085, setting the second highest price for a jewel owned by Marie-Antoinette and the highest price for a diamond jewel ever sold with the storied Marie-Antoinette provenance.

JEWELS ONLINE: THE GENEVA EDIT 2 to 11 November
The sale offered 251 lots and was 91% sold by lot and achieved CHF 6,650,750. 475 people from 29 countries were registered for the auction. The to lot of the auction was lot 101 a multi-gem “Luisiana” Parrot brooch made circa 1995 by Cartier selling for CHF 212,500. The sale represented the highest selling online sale for Christie’s Geneva.
WATCHES ONLINE: THE GENEVA EDIT 8 to 16 November
The sale offered 189 lots of which 93% found new owners, totalling CHF3,539,200. Of the 630 registrants 25% were new to Christie’s and 43% of first time buyers were millennials. Top lot was the first lot a Rolex, white gold Rainbow Daytona, reference 116599, made in 2014, selling for 350,000. The average price per lot was CHF13,300 and private buyers accounted for 84% of the value.
