HOKUSAI’S THIRTY-SIX VIEWS OF MOUNT FUJI THE COMPLETE SET
NEW YORK – Christie’s is proud to announce that a rare, complete set of Hokusai’s monumental series, Fugaku sanjurokkei (Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji) – the first to be offered at auction in two decades – is embarking on a world tour. The set can be seen in its entirety at Christie’s galleries in Tokyo, 13-14 November, 2023; Hong Kong, 25 November-1 December 2023; and Paris, 8-12 December 2023. Christie’s will offer the set at live auction in March, 2024, during Asian Arts Week in New York. This series of 46 woodblock prints by Katsushika Hokusai was created from 1830-1833. It was a great success in its day – which is why the series was expanded to 46 prints – and has gone on to be one of the best known, most reproduced, and most influential works of art of all time. The best known of the prints in the series are The Great Wave off Kanagawa, or The Great Wave; Fine Wind, Clear Morning, also known as Red Fuji; and Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit, also known as Black Fuji.
Head of Japanese and Korean Art, Christie’s New York Takaaki Murakami (村上高明), said: “This is a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire one of the greatest and most influential works of art in history. The last time a complete set of the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji appeared on the market was 20 years ago. I urge everyone who can to take advantage of a rare opportunity and come see this series of masterpieces in person at Christie’s galleries worldwide.”
