• 20/21 London to Paris is led by works from pioneering artists representing the cultural exchange between these two art capitals: Marc Chagall, Yves Klein, and Claude Monet

• The collection Marc Chagall, Colour of Life: Works Formerly from the Artist's Estate achieved a total of £9,736,500 / $11,946,686 / €11,274,867 and was 100% sold

• These artists achieved top prices on 28 June:

PHILANTHROPY

•  This season Christie’s is supporting fundraising efforts for humanitarian aid in Ukraine

•  Jeff Koons’ seminal sculpture Balloon Monkey (Magenta) raised a total of £10,136,500 / $12,437,486 / €11,738,067

•  The sculpture was generously donated by Victor and Olena Pinchuk

•  The work was acquired by Jens Faurschou who commented: “It is a double joy to have had a chance to purchase such a phenomenal work by one of the leading voices in contemporary art for an outstanding collection, and to contribute to humanitarian efforts for victims of the war on Ukraine. We celebrate these vital charitable initiatives from the art world, and we need more.”


SUSTAINABILITY

•  Artists for ClientEarth – Beatriz Milhazes’ Cebola Roxa - offered as part of Christie’s initiative with Gallery Climate Coalition – has now raised more than £5.6 million [hammer] in the last eight months

         - Antony Gormley, Root: £350,000 [hammer]

• Artists for ClientEarth became ClientEarth's largest single donor of 2021

•  With funding from the auctions, ClientEarth has been able to: 

         - Expand its operations in the US

         - Create and launch a litigation strategy to protect rainforests, the animals and people who live with them, globally including the Amazon, West Africa and South East Asia

         - Expand its decarbonisation work by cutting off the financial flow to fossil fuels, focusing on Asian coal

 

WOMEN ARTISTS

•  Barbara Hepworth, Hollow Form with White Interior: £5,785,500 / $7,098,809 / €6,699,609, a world auction record for the artist

•  Leonora Carrington’s Ferret Race (Stoat Race): £1,362,000 / $1,671,174 / €1,577,196, attracting competitive bidding

•  Work by female artists accounts for 48% of living artists in the London Evening Sale. Leading results were achieved for:

         - Lucy Bull, No More Blue Tomorrows: £277,200 / $340,124 / €320,998

         - Rachel Jones, Spliced Structure: £403,200 / $494,726 / €466,906

MARC CHAGALL

• The 20 lots offered in Marc Chagall, Colour of Life: Works Formerly from the Artist's Estate achieved a total of £9,736,500 / $11,946,686 / €11,274,867, more than double the low estimate of the collection

• The collection was 100% sold, with 90% of lots selling over the high estimate

• The group was led by Le peintre et les mariés aux trois couleurs, which sold for £1,602,000 / $1,965,654 / €1,855,116

• An average of seven bidders per lot participated in the sale

 

20th CENTURY MASTERS

• 20th century masters led the Paris offering:

• Yves Klein, Sculpture éponge rose sans titre, (SE 207): £1,746,114 / $2,142,482 / €2,022,000
