Post-War and Contemporary Art
Christie’s is glad to present five works from Post-War & Contemporary that explore the timeless theme of abstraction and minimalism. A top highlight is SP58 created by American artist Sterling Ruby who’s known for the diversity of his artistic practice. SP58 is an unexpected yet wonderful combination of the dense atmospheric effects of color field painting with graffitied symbols and scribbles. Additionally we feel very fortunate to bring two stunning sculpture works by the most celebrated artists in this field - Antony Gormley and Anish Kapoor. As mentioned by the Gormley studio, “Each Domain is an attempt to separate the subtle body from the material body; to abstract an attitude and expose it to light and space”. Untitled by Anish Kapoor is also a classic piece, an attempt to reduce the art to its very basic and pure form, a step closer to the spiritual sublime.

Impressionist and Modern Art
Leading the Evening sale’s 20th Century Western art selection is a resonating set of 19 silver plates designed by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) in 1956. Initially kept for the artist’s own personal collection, in 1967 Picasso authorised the silversmiths Francois et Pierre Hugo to produce each plate in a numbered edition of 20. Presently on offer is one of only a few known complete sets, each featuring a unique and playful design portraying some of the artist’s most favoured motifs. Offered for the first time at auction by Christie’s in mainland China is an exquisite and monumental bronze by Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917), La Cariatide au vase. Sold directly by the Musée Rodin, Paris, this imposing work draws upon classical subject matter and the emotive stylisation of his predecessor Michelangelo. Developed from a motif in Rodin’s most celebrated composition, The Gates of Hell, the original plaster of La Cariatide au vase is housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and other posthumous bronze casts presently reside in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Cleveland Art Museum; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Following pervasive interest in the work of French artists Bernard Buffet (French, 1928-1999) and André Brasilier (French, B. 1929) in our 2014-2015 Shanghai sales, we are pleased to present Buffet’s superbly worked 1954 still life, Compotier et vase de fleurs and a harmonious winter landscape filled with horse riders in Brasilier’s Promenade à cheval, featuring glittering gold leaf. A further sale highlight is Marc Chagall's (Russian/French, 1887-1985) 1959 composition, Les amoureux à la palette, which incorporates some of the Russian born artist's central dreamlike elements, resulting in the visual poetry for which he is celebrated.

Damien Hirst’s art deals with the polarities of human experience: birth and death, science and religion, fear and love. “Love is a beautiful thing” he says, “I see it as a small antidote to all the horror in the world”. Big Love, a bright red heart embellished with butterfly wings, joyfully celebrates love while also hinting at its fragility.
The author and ethnographer Michel Leiris (1901-1990) was a significant influence on Francis Bacon. Bacon identified with Leiris's writings in which the author struggled to understand the intimate, and yet fundamentally violent, nature of experience. This was a theme which was powerfully expressed by Bacon in his studies of the Bull Fight, in which the struggle between corrida and bull embodies man’s conquest of nature. Miroir de la Tauromachie (Mirror of the Bullfight), a collaboration between the artist and author, is a profound meditation bringing together text and image.
