Shanghai, September 29, 2015 -– Christie’s China announces that its autumn auctions commencing on 24 October will be held at the Peninsula Hotel in Shanghai. Highlights at the four auctions include new categories in fine arts and collectibles.

+86 First Open, dedicated to a new generation of contemporary Chinese artists and featuring 33 works of diverse media, styles and themes, will debut at the autumn Shanghai auctions.

Christie’s Chinese and Asian Contemporary Design sale will return to Shanghai with an even richer selection of unique items, created by some of the most sophisticated designers and craftsmen currently active in Asia, demonstrating the dynamism of Asian decorative art and design, its exceptional traditional craftsmanship, and modern day utility.

The traditional evening auction of major Asian and Western 20th Century & Contemporary Art features a phenomenal selection of exceptional art from the West and the East spanning a wide range of categories, such as Asian 20th century and Contemporary Art, Chinese Contemporary Ink, Impressionist and Modern Art, Post-War and Contemporary Art and Prints. The Post-War & Contemporary Art section will also feature five works exploring the themes of abstraction and minimalism, including a painting by Sterling Ruby (b. 1972) and sculptures by Anish Kapoor (b.1954) and Antony Gormley (b. 1950). Highlights of Impressionist and Modern Art include an impressive set of 19 silver plates designed in 1956 by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), and La Cariatide au vase, a monumental bronze by Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), an artist whose work will be auctioned by Christie’s for the first time in mainland China.

Elements of Style, an auction of luxury collectibles, will present 110 exquisite timepieces alongside an inaugural sale of a collection of 18 top quality handbags from renowned international brands.

A private sale exhibition will be dedicated to Jewellery, alongside The Art of Music, featuring exceptionally rare Italian stringed instruments which Christie’s will bring to China for the very first time, exquisitely highlighting the Golden Age of Italian making.

Christie’s Shanghai Autumn Week will also showcase a selection of International Sales Highlights, including among others, precious antique Gold Boxes to be auctioned in London this December.

To engage and inspire private collectors, Christie's will host a programme of interesting lectures and art forums.

Through Christie’s innovative auctions and exhibitions in China and overseas, we build on our trusted relationship with clients by offering the best accessibility of art work and meeting the changing taste in demands. From the outstanding musical instruments from 17-18th century's Italy, to the brave new work of emerging Chinese contemporary artists and Asian designers, we have kept the fascination of the art collectors and enthusiasts alike to engage with Christie's and to live with art."

Francois Curiel, Chairman of Christie’s Asia Pacific, added: “Since our inaugural Shanghai auctions in 2013, Christie’s has been bringing to China museum-quality exhibitions and educational programmes as well as introducing new approaches to art sales in this market. As a leader in global auctions, we will continue to reinvent ourselves by offering our clients new categories in our auctions to better serve collectors in Asia, Europe and America."

The inaugural +86 First Open auctions will feature an ensemble of artists born in the late 1960s to late 1980s. Post-War and Contemporary Art

Christie’s is glad to present five works from Post-War & Contemporary that explore the timeless theme of abstraction and minimalism. A top highlight is SP58 created by American artist Sterling Ruby who’s known for the diversity of his artistic practice. SP58 is an unexpected yet wonderful combination of the dense atmospheric effects of color field painting with graffitied symbols and scribbles. Additionally we feel very fortunate to bring two stunning sculpture works by the most celebrated artists in this field - Antony Gormley and Anish Kapoor. As mentioned by the Gormley studio, “Each Domain is an attempt to separate the subtle body from the material body; to abstract an attitude and expose it to light and space”. Untitled by Anish Kapoor is also a classic piece, an attempt to reduce the art to its very basic and pure form, a step closer to the spiritual sublime.

Impressionist and Modern Art

Leading the Evening sale’s 20th Century Western art selection is a resonating set of 19 silver plates designed by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) in 1956. Initially kept for the artist’s own personal collection, in 1967 Picasso authorised the silversmiths Francois et Pierre Hugo to produce each plate in a numbered edition of 20. Presently on offer is one of only a few known complete sets, each featuring a unique and playful design portraying some of the artist’s most favoured motifs. Offered for the first time at auction by Christie’s in mainland China is an exquisite and monumental bronze by Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917), La Cariatide au vase. Sold directly by the Musée Rodin, Paris, this imposing work draws upon classical subject matter and the emotive stylisation of his predecessor Michelangelo. Developed from a motif in Rodin’s most celebrated composition, The Gates of Hell, the original plaster of La Cariatide au vase is housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and other posthumous bronze casts presently reside in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Cleveland Art Museum; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Following pervasive interest in the work of French artists Bernard Buffet (French, 1928-1999) and André Brasilier (French, B. 1929) in our 2014-2015 Shanghai sales, we are pleased to present Buffet’s superbly worked 1954 still life, Compotier et vase de fleurs and a harmonious winter landscape filled with horse riders in Brasilier’s Promenade à cheval, featuring glittering gold leaf. A further sale highlight is Marc Chagall's (Russian/French, 1887-1985) 1959 composition, Les amoureux à la palette, which incorporates some of the Russian born artist's central dreamlike elements, resulting in the visual poetry for which he is celebrated.

Damien Hirst’s art deals with the polarities of human experience: birth and death, science and religion, fear and love. “Love is a beautiful thing” he says, “I see it as a small antidote to all the horror in the world”. Big Love, a bright red heart embellished with butterfly wings, joyfully celebrates love while also hinting at its fragility.

The author and ethnographer Michel Leiris (1901-1990) was a significant influence on Francis Bacon. Bacon identified with Leiris's writings in which the author struggled to understand the intimate, and yet fundamentally violent, nature of experience. This was a theme which was powerfully expressed by Bacon in his studies of the Bull Fight, in which the struggle between corrida and bull embodies man’s conquest of nature. Miroir de la Tauromachie (Mirror of the Bullfight), a collaboration between the artist and author, is a profound meditation bringing together text and image.
