London – Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale achieved a total of £11,466,504 / €13,243,812 / $13,989,135 with strong sell through rates of 87% by lot and 86% by value.

Günther Förg’s Untitled (2007) led the Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale, selling to a bidder in the room for £441,000. Elizabeth Peyton’s Mark (Smoking) sold for £289,800 against an estimate of £50,000-70,000, while Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkin was an additional highlight, selling for £327,600. Following the record price achieved in the 20th / 21st Century: London Evening Sale on 13 October, Salvo’s Untitled (2006) sold for £201,600 against an estimate of £60,000-90,000. Having set a new benchmark for the artist’s market on 13 October, two works on paper by Paula Rego sold well - Little Girl Showing Off achieved £88,200 while A Fadista sold for £32,760 (estimate: £8,000-12,000).

Further works from The Sam Josefowitz Collection were offered in the Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale, with Tony Cragg’s First Person achieving £151,200 against a low estimate of £40,000.

Additional highlights included:

  • Andy Warhol, Pia Zadora (£371,700)
  • Gerhard Richter’s Grau (Grey) sold for £315,000 (estimate: £150,000-200,000)
  • Wojciech Fangor’s E43 realised £214,200 against a low estimate of £120,000
  • Scott Kahn’s Winter Morning sold for £302,400 against an estimate of £100,000-150,000
  • Jenny Holzer’s Survival: Protect me… achieved £252,000 (estimate: £120,000-180,000)
  • William Kentridge, Horse: Patriarchatus Alexandrini (£207,900)
  • Li Tianbing’s Untitled (2018) sold for £107,100 against a low estimate of £40,000
  • Mohammed Sami’s Joseph’s Coat III sold for £119,700 (estimate: £30,000-50,000)

Philanthropy continues to be at the heart of Christie’s sales programming.

  • South London Gallery: Following the record result for Alvaro Barrington on 13 October, Sir Michael Craig-Martin’s Untitled (Nike trainer magenta) realised £35,280 and Federico Herrero’s Dota sold for £6,048
  • Hassan Hajjaj’s Love Maroc sold for £18,900, benefitting Assafou Association in Support of the Earthquake Victims of Morocco
  • Mona Hatoum’s Untitled (Basket II) was sold to benefit Earthquake Victims in Turkey, realising £15,120

Artist records were realised for Lakwena Maciver’s Ha-Ha 8 (£20,160), sold as part of Christie’s collaboration with MOWAA, and Cece Philips’ Old Friend Encounter (£21,420), the first time that the artist’s work had been offered at auction.

* Sales continue with First Open: Post-War and Contemporary Art Online, which remains open for bidding until 17 October.
