Hong Kong – This autumn, Christie’s proudly presents “Rich Golden Hues And Graceful Forms - Classical Chinese Furniture From The Tseng Collection”, a sale to be held on 29 November 2022, comprising 28 lots of exquisite Chinese huanghuali furniture.

The Tseng Collection features the finest and rarest quality huanghuali furniture from the late Ming dynasty. Each piece reflects the collector’s fascination with the Ming literati – the pursuit and appreciation of classical aesthetic preferences, which are represented in the works of art from this period.

The collector, Ms Piper Tseng, has an established reputation as a connoisseur in the field of Chinese furniture. For Tseng, Ming dynasty huanghuali furniture has held an aesthetic appeal since the very beginning of her collecting journey in the 1990s. Tseng’s discerning taste, coupled with her passion for Chinese classical furniture, has resulted in this huanghuali collection, distinguished by rare forms and extensive provenance history.

The collection has been amassed from some of the world’s most esteemed furniture experts including Grace Wu Bruce, Peter Lai, Charles Wong and Nicholas Grindley. Prominent pieces in this auction were acquired from the famous Museum of Chinese Classical Furniture in Renaissance, California, whose collection sold at Christie’s New York in September 1996. The scholar, Curtis Evarts, served as curator for the Museum of Chinese Classical Furniture, and also as adviser to Piper Tseng assembling together this collection.

Highlights from the Tseng Collection have been exhibited at important at important museums around the world in the last 20 years, including the National Museum of History in Taipei; the Crow Museum of Asian Art in Dallas, Texas; and the Los Angeles County Museum. Masterpieces from this collection includes an important and extremely rare huanghuali circular incense stand, xiangji (cover photo), and a magnificent single plank huanghuali recessed trestle-leg table, qiaotou'an (photo below).
