Christie’s Hong KongChinese Ceramics And Works Of Art

Hong Kong – Following three remarkably successful sales of archaic jades from the Chang Wei-Hwa collection, Christie’s is honoured to present part IV “The Chang Wei-Hwa Collection of Archaic Jades: The Qin and Han Periods”. This dedicated standalone live auction will be held on 29 November 2022, comprising 73 lots with dating spanning across the Qin (221-206 BC) to Han (206 BC – AD 220) Dynasties. The sale has been meticulously curated and is arranged by types of carvings, aesthetics and academic importance.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The top lot of the sale An Exceedingly Rare And Exceptional Jade Carving Of A Mythical Beast, Bixie (estimate: HK$8,000,000 – 12,000,000, cover image) bears a striking and dynamic shape, with its wings lifted skyward. The masterfully carved jade is an important example of Chinese representations of mythical animals.

  • The jade carving technique of the Han dynasty is famous for its straightforwardness, and the main motif for Western Han Dynasty is auspicious animals. Important and rare highlights of this sale, including A Late White Jade Reticulated ‘Phoenix’ Plaque (estimate: HK$2,200,000 – 3,500,000); A Very Rare Jade Reticulated ‘Phoenix’ Archer’s Ring (estimate: HK$1,500,000 – 2,500,000); A Pair Of Jade Reticulated ‘Dragon’ Pendants, Xi (estimate: HK$700,000 – 900,000); and A Jade Reticulated ‘Dragon’ Sword Chape (estimate: HK$450,000 – 600,000), demonstrate well the trend for the period.
