The dedicated Rich Golden Hues and Graceful Forms - Classical Chinese Furniture From The Tseng Collection sale comprises 28 lots of exquisite Chinese huanghuali furniture. The collection has been amassed from some of the world’s most esteemed furniture experts including Grace Wu Bruce, Peter Lai, Charles Wong and Nicholas Grindley. Christie’s will present part IV The Chang Wei-Hwa Collection of Archaic Jades: The Qin and Han Periods in this November. Covering 73 lots with dating spanning across the Qin (221-206 BC) to Han (206 BC – AD 220) Dynasties, key highlights include An Exceedingly Rare And Exceptional Jade Carving Of A Mythical Beast, Bixie (estimate: HK$8,000,000 – 12,000,000) and A Late White Jade Reticulated ‘Phoenix’ Plaque (estimate: HK$2,200,000 – 3,500,000). More to announce on 13 October 2022.
Leading the Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art sale this autumn is A Fine Magnificent Carved ‘Dragon’ Celadon-Glazed Meiping (estimate: HK$50,000,000 – 70,000,000; image on cover and above). This beautiful meiping, hailing from an important Asian collection, was acquired from Christie’s Hong Kong in 1996 and not seen in the open market ever since. The meiping combines a strong profile with a delicate pale celadon glaze and a design of powerful imperial five-clawed dragons amongst clouds and waves. The powerful five-clawed imperial dragon with horns was the symbol of the emperor, and appears in many forms on Chinese decorative arts.
Further highlights from numerous important private collections, include A Very Rare Pair Of Doucai Waterpots (image at the top) dating to the Yongzheng reign, with only four other examples appear to be recorded; a Very Rare Early-Ming Blue And White Fruit Bowl (image on the right) dating to the Xuande reign (1426-1435), a particularly fine example of classic blue and white porcelain with a prestigious provenance – it was once in the collection of the renowned Chinese collector Edward T. Chow (1910-1980); An Imperial Tianhuang Rectangular Seal, one of the two Chuilu seals made during the Qianlong reign; A Rare Pair Of Cloisonne Enamel ‘Peacock’ Censers from the Qianlong Period (1736-1795); and A Spinach-Green Jade Tripod Censer And Cover from the Qing Dynasty, 18th century, which was once exhibited at the world-renowned Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1935. The Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art auction will also present 60 lots of 17th century porcelain from the world-renowned British collector and scholar, the Late Sir Michael Butler (1927 – 2013), under a single-owner section titled “Gems of 17th century Porcelain from the Butler Family Collection”. One of the featured lots include A Rare And Large ‘Master of the Rocks’ Underglaze-Blue And Copper-Red-Decorated Dish from the Kangxi Period.
