20TH / 21ST CENTURY: LONDON EVENING SALE REALISES A TOTAL OF £72,533,850 / $80,294,972 / €82,616,055 ACHIEVING SELL-THROUGH RATES OF 100% BY LOT AND BY  VALUE.

- Breakdown of buyers by region [by lot] for 20th / 21st Century: London Evening Sale: 62% EMEA / 15% Americas / 23% APAC

- 21% of new registrants to sale were millennials

- Fresh to market artworks lead the evening sale series: David Hockney, Gerhard Richter and Francis Bacon

- David Hockney’s Early Morning, Saint-Maxime led the Evening Sale Series realising £20,899,500 / $23,135,747 / €23,804,531, more than double the high pre-sale estimate of £10 million [last seen at auction in 1988]

- Gerhard Richter, Wolkenstudie (grün-blau) (Study for Clouds (Green-blue)): £11,167,000 / $12,361,869 / €12,719,213 [first time at auction having remained in the same private collection since 1982, it was also the first time on public display]

- Francis Bacon, Painting, 1990: £7,102,250 / $7,862,191 / €8,089,463 [first time at auction]

 

PHILANTHROPY

- A Place with No Name: Works from the Sina Jina Collection realised a total of £2,960,484 / $3,277,256 / €3,371,991

- The consignor of this collection will donate a minimum of 20% of his proceeds of sale to The African Arts Trust (registered in England and Wales with charity number 1141553) The African Arts Trust has indicated that they intend to use the funds to support the work of Gasworks, The Africa Centre, Lamu Environment Fund and Bët Bi

- Tracey Emin’s Like a Cloud of Blood was sold by the artist to raise funds for her pioneering TKE studio complex in Margate. Setting a record for a painting by Emin, it realised £2,322,000 / $2,570,454 / €2,644,758

- Christie’s unprecedented support for philanthropic endeavours in 2022 will culminate with the historic sale of the Paul G. Allen Collection, with highlights on view in London from 14 to 17 October

- Sarah Ball, Untitled (AC16): £94,500 / $104,612 / €107,636 a world auction record for the artist

The sale was led by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s Highpower (£1,482,000 / $1,640,574 / €1,687,998), which realised the fourth highest price at auction for the artist, and positioning the result as the 11th within the top 15 across both sales at Christie’s
