NEW YORK – This June, Christie’s is pleased to present three live sales of exceptional design on June 6, 7 and 10 in New York, including The Spirit of Paris, An Important Private Collection of 1920s and 1930s Design (June 6), a private collection of over 70 works by Alberto Giacometti, Jean-Michel Frank, Jean Dunand, Marcel Coard, among others, Tiffany Masterworks from the Garden Museum, A Private Collection (June 10) a dedicated sale of works by Tiffany Studios, and Design, (June 7), with a range of important works by 20th and 21st Century innovators of Art Nouveau, French Art Deco, American Studios, Mid-Century, Italian and Contemporary Design. The exhibition will be on view in Christie’s New York galleries starting June 2.

Design, a various-owner auction includes nearly 180 lots of important design by American and European artists from the 20^th and 21^st centuries. The sale is led by the spectacular 'Table Berceau, modèle aux Renards' by Diego Giacometti from a distinguished New York collection, originally commissioned by Lee Kolker and detailed with a fox motif ($1,400,000-1,800,000). Other masterworks include an exceptional ‘Table aux Antilopes’ by François-Xavier Lalanne ($1,000,000-1,500,000), completed by a flock of ‘Moutons de Pierre’. A selection of important sculptures by Rembrandt Bugatti, including the rare ‘Lionne jouant avec une boule’ ($500,000-700,000), the early ‘Lion de l’Atlas’ ($300,000-500,000) and his charming ‘Emeu’ ($80,000-120,000) also advance the playful theme of animalia.

Several significant private collections will be on offer, including Modernist Vision: Art and Design from the Estate of Annette Friedland, with rare works by Georges Jouve and Jean Prouvé, The Miottel Museum: Highlights from the S.S. Normandie featuring several of the extraordinary Art Deco panels by Jean Dupas that once adorned the walls of the historic luxury ocean liner, A Private Collection of Contemporary Art and Design, Palm Beach, with works by Harry Bertoia and Julian Schnabel, Property from a Member of the Matisse Family with two Giacometti floor lamps, as well as The Collection of Dr. Thomas Chua with Art Nouveau glass by Emile Gallé and Daum, Property from the Garden Museum with a historic sculpted mahogany piano by Louis Majorelle ($200,000-300,000), and Tiffany from a Private Connecticut Collection, featuring an important ‘Laburnum’ Table Lamp by Tiffany Studios ($150,000-200,000).

Highlights of American mid-century design include a rare ‘Conoid’ Table of highly figured burl top with free edges, commissioned directly from the artist George Nakashima by a Baltimore collector, and Bertoia sculptures from the collection of Lucia Zurkowski. From a notable Upper West-Side Manhattan Collection is an important ‘Mesa’ table by T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings ($200,000-300,000). Styled to evoke the geographical features of the American southwest, this biomorphic design resonates with contemporaneous French design by celebrated artist Jean Royère and his important ‘Forme Libre’ low table from the ‘Salon au 50ème étage d’un immeuble de Manhattan’ exhibition at the Hôtel de Sens in Paris.

These important decorative styles, from turn of the century French art glass, to American modernism, and from Japanese contemporary glass to South Korean contemporary furniture, all elements of 20^th and 21^st century are on public preview at Christie’s galleries at 20 Rockefeller Plaza from 2-7 June 2022. The sale will take place live at Rockefeller Center on Tuesday 7 June 2022 at 11am.
