Karel Appel, Deux mondes (1959, price realised: €226,800) and Salvo, Inverno (Winter) (2006, price realised: €113,400)

Amsterdam – Christie’s 20th / 21st Century: Amsterdam Online Sale realised a total of €2,262,330 / $2,480,243 / £1,981,025. The auction was led by Karel Appel’s Deux mondes, which sold for €226,800, and was offered as part of a group of 18 works that represented the diverse, sometimes diametrically opposed perspectives of CoBrA on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the movement. Additional highlights from the group included Constant’s Vogel, which realised €126,000 against a low estimate of €70,000, Asger Jorn’s Portrait: Signora Albissola, which achieved €113,400 (estimate: €40,000-60,000) and two paintings by Bram Bogart which far exceeded pre-sale expectations: Kleingroen (Small Green) sold for €52,920 (estimate: €4,000-6,000) while Blauwdoorgeel (Blue through Yellow) totalled €50,400 (estimate: €20,000-30,000).

Following record results for the artist in London in October, three works by Salvo witnessed competitive bidding online: Inverno (Winter) (€113,400 – estimate: €50,000-70,000); Shahr-e Sabz (€22,680 – estimate: €3,000-5,000) and Val d’Itri (€20,160 – estimate: €2,500-3,000).

Further highlights included Jan Schoonhoven’s R70-18 (€100,800); Joseph Kosuth’s 'Titled (Art as Idea as Idea)' [copy] (Eng.-Dutch) (€47,880); Thierry Noir’s Colette Va Chercher De L’Eau (€30,240) and Sandro Chia’s Untitled (Blast) (€27,720).
