ASIAN ART WEEK RECORDS SET FOR HOKUSAI’S GREAT WAVE | MOON JAR
RESULTS – Christie’s sale of Japanese and Korean Art achieved a total of $11,413,992, an impressive 253% hammer above low estimate. There was global participation with registered bidders from 22 countries in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. The sale attracted heavy bidding, and spirited applause as records fell for pieces in two legendary categories. A fine and rare impression of one of the most reproduced images in all of art history, Under the Well of the Great Wave Off Kanagawa, the Japanese woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai brought a record price of $2,760,000. An Important White Porcelain Moon Jar sold for $4,560,000, setting the new record for an example of this prototypical category of Korean pottery.
Other notable results included $441,000 for Three Seated Women, 1962, an oil painting Park Sookeun, whose work is rare and highly prized by collectors in Korea and around the world. A set of 12 ukiyo-e Japanese woodblock prints by Kitagawa Utamaro, depicting The Twelve Hours of the Pleasure Quarter, realized $226,800, more than five times its low estimate. A six-panel screen by an anonymous artist in the 17th century Japan, Waterwheel and Plovers on the Uji River made $138,600.
