NEW YORK – Christie’s New York two-day series of Design sales took place on December 7 and 8, 2023 seeing exceptional results. The first sale in the series featured a group of works by leading male and female artists and designers hailing from 1900 through to the present day and achieved $11,408,670. The second and final sale was a showcase of works by the innovative glassmaker Louis Comfort Tiffany and the Tiffany Studio totaled $3,676,050. Together, the auctions achieved $15,084,720, selling for 86% of their low estimate.

The highest prices in Thursday’s Design sale were achieved for exemplary objects made by Les Lalannes, the iconic 20th century artist couple. François-Xavier Lalanne bronzes realized the two top prices, with ‘Singe Alternatif IV’ selling for $945,000 and a black Bélier selling for $882,000. The third highest price came for a superb 'Singerie' Armchair created by Claude Lalanne.

French Art Deco masterworks performed well throughout the sale. The Jerry Moss Collection showcasing masterworks from the era achieved 147% of aggregate low estimate, including breakout prices for Albert Cheuret’s rare ‘Herons’ console ($277,200), and Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann’s rare Ceiling light ($277,200), amongst many more.  The iconic ‘Birth of Aphrodite’ panels created by Jean Dupas for the Grand Salon of the famed oceanliner S.S. Normandie saw a strong result, selling for $378,000, and Jean Dunand’s extraordinary bed ‘Aux Nénuphars et Poissons’ in lacquer and mother-of-pearl inlays, formerly in the collection of Steven A. Greenberg surpassed its high estimate to sell for $441,000. A Charlotte Perriand ‘Tunisie’ Bookcase realized $352,000.

On Friday December 8, the Tiffany sale ended the week and saw lively and engaged participation globally. The top lot of the sale was a 'Landscape with Magnolias and Irises' Window, which realized $705,600, three and a half times its low estimate. Additional top lots include an Important ‘Grapevine and Trellis’ Window, which sold for $504,000, and a 'Dragonfly' Table Lamp, which made $441,000.
