New York – Treasures of a Storied Manhattan Collection totaled $1,679,375 / £1,191,046 / €1,386,378 and was 100% sold by value, with participation across 16 countries. The top two lots of the auction were a Chinese twelve-panel Coromandel screen, dated by inscription to the fifty-first year of the Kangxi Period, corresponding to 1712 and an important Empire ‘Point de Savonnerie’ Tournai carpet, ‘Civile,’ from the ‘Cohortes’ series, woven by Manufacture Piat Lefebvre et Fils, circa 1810. Both lots realized $212,500, significantly above each of their low estimates. Another top lot was a pair of George II giltwood armchairs, after a design by William Kent, circa 1740, selling for $125,000.
Victoria Allerton Tudor, Head of Sale, commented “We are thrilled to see the enduring appeal of objects with fantastic historical significance. The eclectic mix of the sale with an emphasis on quality and story captivated our buyers with several lots coming down to a duel. Strong prices were realized for carpets and furniture and decoration of all geographies and time periods.”
