NEW YORK – Christie’s New York is pleased to present The Exceptional Sale taking place 1 February 2024. The Exceptional Sale is the leading global auction platform for the decorative, applied arts and pop and sports culture, bringing together the best of the best. Focusing on provenance, rarity, design and craftsmanship, the sale includes the finest works of art from English and European furniture, clocks, porcelain, silver, Chinese furniture, antiquities, memorabilia and natural history.
This February, The Exceptional Sale features an iconic Olympic gold medal presented to long jumper Bob Beamon at the 1968 Mexico City games, as well as a solid gold vase made by Tiffany & Co. for the Gould family with enamels by Frederick Remington. Ceramics include a rare 18th century Meissen garniture and a massive Wedgwood & Bentley sculpture of the Infant Hercules in black basalt. Among the masterpieces of French and English furniture are a pair of tabourets belonging to Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais, a Louis XIV Gobelins tapestry formerly in the collection of William K. Vanderbilt (1849-1920), aa breakfront bookcase made by Wright and Elwick for Lord James Brydges, the Marquess of Carnarvon and 3rd Duke of Chandos.
And for lovers of both rocks and rock n’ roll, The Exceptional Sale includes a spectacular red tourmaline known as ‘The Y’, as well as Elvis’s Gretsch guitar from his Las Vegas residency, Janis Joplin’s gold vest and an important 1966 painting, Images of a Woman, made and signed by all four Beatles.
