Paris - This week, Christie's Paris presented two sales of contemporary art, one on December 6 and an online sale from November 28 to December 8. With an overall estimate of €8.5 - 12.3 million, both sales featured a carefully selected selection of sixty works for the December 6 sale and one hundred and fifty lots for the online sale, including a major group from a prestigious French private collection. The two sales, featuring an eclectic selection of works by artists from the four corners of the globe, totalled €10,7 million | $11,6 million, with 92% of lots sold, including 57% above estimate and bidders and underbidders from 47 countries.
The day sale on December 6 was driven by two previously unseen paintings by Pierre Soulages, created five decades apart: Peinture 54 x 81 cm, 1951 and Peinture 117 x 130 cm, May 20, 2007, which sold for €882,000 and €630,000 respectively. With 86% of lots sold, the sale totaled €8.3 million, half of which were sold above the high estimate, notably:
- Anna Eva Bergman, N°31-1963 (lot 10) sold for €201,600 (estimate €40,000 - €60,000)
- Lynne Drexler, Burnst Sun (lot 11) sold for €90,720 (estimate €30,000 - 50,000)
- Sam Francis, Bleu et rose (lot 32) sold for €277,200 (estimate €120,000 - 160,000)
- Josef Šíma, Clair Obscur II (lot 35) sold for 352,800 € (estimate 150,000 - 250,000 €)

Featuring works at more affordable prices, the sale included some pleasant surprises, notably: Geer Van Velde's Composition (lot 118) sold for €88,200, well above its high estimate of €50,000, Serge Poliakoff's Composition Abstraite (lot 103) realised €75,600, almost twice its low estimate, but also Salvo's Il Porto (lot 181) sold for €81,900, four times its low estimate, and Claude Viallat's Empreinte (lot 134), estimated at €10,000 - €15,000, realised €30,240.
