RESULTS | Modern British Art Evening Sale, London 19 November 2018
Nicholas Orchard, Head of Modern British Art, Christie’s London and Will Porter, Head of Sale: “The Modern British Art Evening Sale totalled £17,875,750 / $22,934,588 / €20,074,466, making this the highest total for a November Modern British evening sale, with lively bidding and strong sell-through rates of 93% by value and 82% by lot. Registered bidders from 16 countries across 3 continents underlines the continued international appeal for Modern British Art.
The evening was led by British painting, with L. S. Lowry’s A Northern Race Meeting realising £5,296,250 / $6,795,088 / €5,947,688, more than three times the estimate of £1,500,000, and Stanley Spencer’s Caulking selling for £2,048,750 / $2,628,546 / €2,300,746. Records were achieved for Leon Kossoff’s Willesden Junction - Autumn Afternoon (£1,388,750 / $1,781,766 / €1,559,566) and Peter Lanyon’s Orpheus (£1,268,750 / $1,627,806 / €1,424,806).
Strong results were also achieved for works by Richard Lin, both realising prices above estimate: Plus (2) (£200,000 / $256,600 / €224,599) and Feb 63 - 65 Painting Relief (£162,500 / $208,487 / €182,487). Highlights for modern sculpture included Henry Moore’s Reclining Figure: Open Pose (£1,328,750 / $1,704,786 / €1,492,186), Barbara Hepworth’s Menhirs (£944,750 / $1,212,114 / €1,060,954) and Elisabeth Frink’s Horse (£668,750 / $858,006 / €751,006.
