London EMEA 21 January 2020

Nicholas Orchard, Head of Modern British Art, Christie’s London and Will Porter, Head of Sale: “The Modern British Art Evening Sale launched the 20th Century auction series in London with a total of £7,772,000 / $10,095,828 / €9,093,240, selling 76% by lot with a spirited response to works with exceptional provenance, including from the Dr Jeffrey Sherwin Collection, The Jeremy Lancaster Collection and the Richard L. Weisman Collection. L.S. Lowry’s The Mill, Pendlebury from the estate of Leonard D. Hamilton, a medical researcher who played a key role in the discovery of the structure of DNA, drew lively bidding and achieved a price of £2,651,250 against a pre-sale estimate of £700,000-1,000,000. From the Collection of Richard L. Weisman, William Turnbull’s Hero II, depicted in 1968 by David Hockney in his portrait American Collectors, realised £671,250. Modernist painting had strong appeal throughout the evening with Ben Nicholson’s 1934 (white relief) (£995,250), John Piper’s Forms on White Ground (£371,250) and Richard Lin’s Painting Relief 27-7-64 (£212,500). William Roberts’s The Wiring Party realised £395,250 against a pre-sale estimate of £150,000, while Lawrence Atkinson’s Vorticist Composition set a world record at auction of £112,500. A further record was set for Matthew Smith's vibrant portrait Connie Martin which sold for £212,500. We look forward to the Day Sale on 22 January and the Allen and Beryl Freer Collection on 23 January.”
