Donald Johnston, International Head of Sculpture: “This is the first standalone sculpture sale to take place in London for over a decade, and we are very pleased with the enthusiastic response to this offering. The sale was led by the bronze aquamanile which realised £962,500, far surpassing the previous world record for an aquamanile at auction. There was a real buzz throughout this sale, with competitive bidding from beginning to end, in the room, over the telephone, and online with Christie’s LIVE. We look forward to important lots of sculpture in The Exceptional Sale in New York on 11 December, led by the magnificent bronze Bacchic figure, by Adriaen de Vries, signed and dated 1626.”
