The top lot of the sale, which was also the top lot in its category across the Hong Kong auction market this season, was Untitled Vert émeraude /Emerald Green) by Zao Wou-Ki, painted circa 1950, which realised HK$ 70,680,000 / US$ 9,144,769 (illustrated left).
5 new world auction records were set for the artists Cesar Legaspi (Philippines), Yun Hyong-Keun (Korea), Rhee Seund Ja (Korea), Lalan (China) and Yasuo Sumi (Japan).
Eric Chang, Deputy Chairman, International Director of Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art, commented “ We were pleased to achieve a strong price for Vert émeraude by Zao Wou-ki, the top lot so far across the Hong Kong auction market this season. There was strong appetite across Asia , with enthusiastic bidding from mainland China, Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, with 70% sold by lot. The special selection of Johnson Chang works were very well received with over 95% of lots sold, demonstrating continued demand for top contemporary Chinese artists such as Zeng Fanzhi, Liu Wei and Wang Xingwei.
The day sales of Asian Contemporary Art and Asian 20th Century Art will both be held on 29 May, with the first of the sales starting at 10.30 am.
