David McLachlan, Harry Williams-Bulkeley, Jo Langston, Dominic Simpson & Louise Phelps, commented: “The demand for gold boxes continues, with bidders competing from around the world and strong prices achieved across all categories of boxes. We were particularly pleased with the private collections from Belgium and Austria. The interest for Parisian boxes was evident with the box by Jean-Baptiste Bertin realising £218,500, an auction record for this goldsmith, and the two boxes by Pierre-Francois Drais achieving £88,900 and £242,500 respectively. European porcelain saw some spectacular prices for Meissen and British Delft. The French private collection attracted huge interest from international collectors, who competed vigorously to acquire animated and playful figure groups by the celebrated Meissen modeller J.J. Kändler. Important pieces of English Royalist delftware from The Birkett Collection also attracted keen competition from British and American private collectors. There were other good prices throughout the ceramics section including £75,000 for a Meissen snuff-box from Blair Castle. Further sale highlights included a portrait miniature of Dr Willis, doctor to King George III, which was bought by Historic Royal Palaces and will be displayed at Kew. An exceptionally rare portrait miniature by Pompeo Batoni realised £64,900 after fierce bidding between clients on the telephone and in the room. Finally the silver category saw strong results for the wide reaching Stern Collection, with collectors focusing on connoisseurship, rarity and fine condition. There were buyers from a broad range of countries and good prices for traditional domestic silver. We look forward to the next Centuries of Style sale in December 2015.” |
