HONG KONG – The Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art day auctions affirm the appeal of Asian art for international collectors.
“Works embodying traditional Asian aesthetics but infused with modern influences were well-received. Collectors showed their appreciation for leading Asian artists such as Koreans Chung Sang-Hwa (b. 1932) and Yun Hyong-Keun (1928-2007), Philippine abstractionist José T. Joya (1931-1995), Indonesian expressionist Affandi (1907-1990) and Thai modernist Thawan Duchanee (1939-2014) whose work The Harvesters sold for a record price. In particular, José Joya’s Homage to Turner tribute to English master of landscape painting, J.M.W Turner “the painter of light” and Masks by Hernando Ruiz Ocampo (1911-1978) also created new world auction records for both artists. While abstract art from renowned Chinese masters like Liu Kuo-Sung (b. 1932) and Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) saw competitive bidding, it was also a new generation of Chinese voices like Yuan Yuan (b. 1973), Chen Fei (b. 1983), Chen Ke (b. 1978) who stood out with their charged portrayals of self, youth and existentialism. Yuan Yuan’s Copper Door Of Savings Society – a vibrant tapestry of colors – set a new auction record for the artist. These auctions are a demonstration of the maturing appetite of collectors for compelling Asian art,” said Eric Chang, Deputy Chairman of Christie's Asia and International Director of Christie’s Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art Department.
