Laetitia Delaloye, Head of Sale, Antiquities, Christie’s London and Max Bernheimer, International Head of Antiquities: “This sale demonstrated the continued strength of the antiquities market for rare works with excellent provenance from private collections, as highlighted by the Alton Edward Mills collection. We are particularly pleased with the result achieved by the Egyptian Serpentine Shabti from the Middle Kingdom, which sparked fierce competition and far exceeded its pre-sale estimate, realising £218,500. Sculpture proved to be very popular, with a stunning over-lifesized statue of Empress Livia selling for £434,500 and a portrait of her grandson Caligula, realising £206,500 against a pre-sale estimate of £60-80,000. An exceptional and rare Egyptian silver diadem performed particularly well, achieving £194,500, and an Apulian volute-Krater from the collection of Tapeley Park realised £134,500. We look forward to the sale in New York on 4th June.”
