RELEASE | Christie's Appoints Edwin Vos as New International Director of the Wine Department

Wines & Spirits
21 January 2020

London- Christie’s announces the appointment of Edwin Vos as new International Head of Wine and Spirits and lead auctioneer for the category. In his new role Mr. Vos will be focusing on key consignments, responsible for wine business development initiatives across the globe as well as working closely with the wine departments in Hong Kong, New York, London and Paris, overseeing the Geneva wine auctions as well.

Edwin Vos joined Christie’s in 2012 as Head of the Amsterdam Wine department. Among his notable achievements are the Baron von Staff sale in 2015, the Bouchard Père & Fils sale in 2016 offered reserve wines directly from the Chateau de Beaune cellars, the Comte de Vogue sale in 2018, which is to date a record-auction for this sought-after Burgundy, and the Alpina 40th anniversary Jubilee sale in 2019.

After graduating from Hotel Management School, Edwin Vos started working in the wine trade where he held various positions buying and selling fine wines. In 1998 he started his personal wine database by noting the fine Bordeaux, Burgundy, Madeira and Vintage Port wines, he came across. As of 2002 Edwin participated at each annual Primeur tastings in Bordeaux, tasting all the Grand Crus of the young vintage. This allowed him to build a deep knowledge and a distinctive reference base of fine Bordeaux wines. In 2007 at the annual Fête de la Fleur, Edwin was introduced to the exclusive Commanderie de Bontemps de Medoc, Graves, Sauternes et Barsac and in 2018 into the Confraria do Vinho do Porto.

Over his eight-year long tenure at Christie’s, one of Edwin’s many successes is to have advanced Christie’s as the auctioneer of choice for Madeira wines. Following his passion and deep knowledge for Madeira, Edwin has started to include selective offerings of old and rare Madeira to all our global auctions. These have attracted a loyal following and are witnessing great success year-on-year. Christie’s remains the leading specialist in this field for 250 years, when our first stand-alone wine auction took place on 25 October 1769, offering several lots of Madeira.

The record priced for a single Madeira bottle stands at $39,200, achieved for JCA & A Terrantez 1715 at Christie’s December 2016 Fine Wine auction in New York, sourced by Edwin Vos.
