London EMEA 7 February 2017

London – In 2012, Dr Bertold Mueller joined the company as Managing Director Christie’s Zurich. As Managing Director Christie‘s Continental Europe, Middle East, Russia and India he is now, with immediate effect, responsible for an extended area that stretches from Portugal to Scandinavia and from Israel to India.

Over the last four years, Bertold has advised art collectors and institutions in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Under his guidance, Christie’s Zurich contributed to numerous important consignments. Furthermore, Bertold acted as host for various specialist and client events.

In his new position, Bertold will continue to oversee these activities and his new responsibilities from Zurich by way of contributing his experience in management and client services to Christie’s offices and sale rooms in numerous countries.

“I am delighted to appoint Dr Bertold Mueller as my successor in the position as Managing Director, Christie’s Continental Europe, Middle East, Russia and India. Taking up our new responsibilities, we will continue to focus our activities on the art and collectors, as well as the exchange with colleagues from different countries and cultures. Dr Bertold Mueller managed Christie’s Zurich with great success over the past years and his experiences and knowledge gained on the art market in Switzerland will be very precious to all our colleagues throughout the different locations,” said Prof Dr Dirk Boll, newly appointed President, Christie’s EMERI.

Bertold has been recently nominated a delegate of UNICEF Switzerland. He regularly conducts auctions for different charities and lectures at the University of Zurich as part of its Executive Master in Art Market Studies. Moreover he routinely gives talks and participates at round table discussions at specialist conferences and art fairs.

Prior to joining Christie’s, Bertold worked as a lawyer for leading Swiss law firms in London and Zurich as well as in the field of art consulting in Zurich, advising Swiss collectors. As a lawyer, his area of expertise encompassed art law and inheritance law. Bertold holds a PhD in law from the University of Zurich, a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Harvard Law School, a Certificate in Advanced Studies from the University of Zurich (in inheritance law) as well as a Master’s in Fine and Decorative Art from the University of Manchester.

Since 1968, Christie’s has been represented in Switzerland. Initially, offices and an auction room were inaugurated in Geneva followed by an office in Zurich ten years later. For over 25 years, Christie’s has held its bi-annual SWISS ART auction in Zurich. An advisory board consisting of nine external members supports Christie’s Switzerland.
