Camille Claudel, L’Abandon (price realised: £831,600) and Auguste Rodin, L’Eternelle Idole, grand modèle (price realised: £630,000)

Exquisite sculptures by Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin highlight the Impressionist and Modern Art Day and Works on Paper Sale

  • A rare lifetime cast of Camille Claudel’s L’Abandon led the Impressionist and Modern Art Day and Works on Paper Sale, selling for £831,600, more than double the low estimate of £350,000
  • Auguste Rodin’s L’Eternelle Idole, grand modèle, one of the earliest bronze casts produced in the 1920s realised £630,000
  • Completing the group, Baiser, 2ème reduction, Rodin’s iconic vision of romantic love, sold for £592,200
  • Ossip Zadkine’s Torse de femme was a further sculptural highlight, realising £239,400 (estimate: £80,000-120,000)

The Art of the Surreal continues to energise the sale platforms at Christie’s

  • Memory of a Surreal Journey: Property from an Important San Francisco Bay Area Collection, defined by pioneering female artists, realised a total of £20,787,800 / $25,044,914 / €23,568,980
    • The Day and Works on Paper portion of the collection sale was highlighted by Joan Miró’s Tête (£163,800)
    • Stella Snead’s Ritual sold for a world auction record price of £75,000 (estimate: £10,000-15,000)
  • Francis Picabia’s Composition led The Art of the Surreal selection of works on 3 March (£189,000)
  • Surrealist works on paper had strong appeal:
    • Salvador Dalí, Première apparition du spectre du père d'Hamlet (Acte I, scène 1) (£151,200)
    • Marcel Duchamp, 9 moules mâlic, étude (£151,200)

Works by Modern Masters resonated with collectors

  • Ceramics by Pablo Picasso exceeded pre-sale expectations, highlighted by Tripode (A.R. 125), which sold for £226,800 against a low estimate of £80,0000
  • Marc Chagall’s Couple sous l’arbre ou Les amoureux (£478,800)
  • Giorgio Morandi’s subtle yet powerful Natura morta led the works on paper portion of the sale, selling for £630,000
  • László Moholy-Nagy, Composition G4 (£693,000)

Additional Highlights

  • Edgar Degas’ Femme tenant un chapeau sold for £504,000 against an estimate of £250,000 while Paysage more than doubled the low estimate of £200,000 to sell for £478,800
  • Henri le Sidaner’s Le Grand Canal, Venise realised £327,600 (estimate: £150,000-250,000)

First Open: Post-War and Contemporary Art Online remains open for bidding until 9 March
