  • Reflecting the strength of the market for S. Lowry across price points, The Lake (£176,400) led the Modern British and Irish Art Day Sale. Three further works by Lowry were presented:
    • The Bandstand, Peel Park (£50,400)
    • Mill Gates (£113,400)
    • Seaham Harbour (£25,200)

 

  • The Bloomsbury Group drew strong bidding:
    • Vanessa Bell, Flower Study (£78,120)
    • Roger Fry, Summer in the Garden, £44,100 (estimate: £5,000-8,000)
    • Roger Fry, Provençal Landscape, St Rémy (£25,200)

 

  • Pioneering British female Surrealist artists saw great demand, continuing Christie’s strength in the Surrealist and Modern British Art markets:
    • Edith Rimmington, Capsicum sold for £15,120, against an estimate of £1,000-2,000, setting a new world auction record for the artist
    • Eileen Agar, Poppy Seed realised £40,320 against a low estimate of £10,000
    • Eileen Agar, Wandering Minstrel (£45,360)
    • Ithell Colquhoun, Kelp Gathering more than doubled its estimate of £8,000 to sell for £21,420

 

  • The Modern British and Irish Art Sales offered the largest group of Vorticist art to date on the market, with eight works offered in the Day Sale, highlighted by:
    • Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Knuckle-Duster, £50,400 (estimate: £8,000-12,000)
    • David Bomberg, Study for 'Vision of Ezekiel' (£37,800)
    • Wyndham Lewis, Abstract Drawing (£32,760)

 

  • Following the record set for a work on paper by Pauline Boty in the Modern British and Irish Art Evening Sale on 21 March, two further works by Pauline Boty were presented in the Day Sale:
    • Nude on the beach sold for £78,120 (estimate: £30,000-50,000)
    • Golden nude (£50,400)

 

  • Additional highlights included:
    • William Turnbull, 15-1963, £170,100 (estimate: £50,000-70,000)
    • Edward Wadsworth, Number Please! (£100,800)
    • Lynn Chadwick, Maquette for The Watchers (£94,500)
    • William Nicholson, The Fountains, Palais Royal (£119,700)
    • Matthew Smith, Peaches in a Striped Dish (£75,600)
    • Celia Paul, Mother Looking Away, £40,320 (estimate: £15,000-25,000)
