CHRISTIE’S MARQUEE WEEK TOTALS $864 MILLION

NEW YORK - Monday, November 13, 2023, Christie’s closed out its Fall Marquee Week of 20th and 21st Century Art Sales, realizing a total of $864,049,952 across five live auctions and one online auction over the course of six days. In total, the sales were sold 96% by value and 103% hammer against low estimate. The sales were comprised of masterpiece objects from the finest artists hailing from the 20th and 21st centuries and exceptional collections that celebrated creativity and artistry in all its forms, anchored by the collections of iconic filmmaker Ivan Reitman and music industry legend Jerry Moss. Sales saw vibrant participation worldwide with active bidding on the phones, online, and in the saleroom, and brought in more than 2.5 million combined viewers livestreaming across Christie’s global platforms.

Bonnie Brennan, President of Christie's Americas, remarked: “This fall, the Christie’s team skillfully assembled a fantastic series of sales, offering a breadth of the finest masterpieces spanning the 20th and 21st centuries. The strong market response to Christie's sales was evidenced in the phenomenal results on Thursday evening – the highest auction total since 2017 for a various-owner sale. We were also thrilled to have the privilege of presenting the personal collections of filmmaker Ivan Reitman and music industry giant Jerry Moss, each a legendary figure in his own creative realm.”

Alex Rotter, Christie’s Chairman of 20th and 21st Century Art, remarks: “The 20/21 sale format is an everevolving platform that brings new challenges and surprises each season. This season continued to demonstrate the strength of the format, far surpassing existing auction records for a number of leading artists across genres—ranging from icons such as Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Mitchell, and the late Fernando Botero to emerging talents like Jadé Fadojutimi and Jenna Gribbon. We look forward to building upon the success with our upcoming sales in Hong Kong.”

Fall Marquee Week also saw exceptional results for restituted artworks, achieving $38,935,000 for Paul Cezanne’s Fruits et pot de gingembre sold to benefit Museum Langmatt in Baden, Switzerland, and $19,771,000 for six Egon Schiele works on paper sold from the collection of Fritz Grünbaum.

Marc Porter, Chairman of Christie’s Americas, said: “Christie’s is honored to commemorate Fritz Grünbaum and Jacob Goldschmidt, and to help bring a measure of justice to their heirs. It is gratifying that Christie’s sale of the Schieles and the Cezanne continue our commitment to seeking justice, underscoring that sales under duress must be addressed as part of the ongoing inquiry into the Nazi regime and its victims. On this 25th anniversary of the Washington Principles that helped establish current-day restitution
practices, Christie’s is proud to be part of the evolution of this field.”
