Wines & Spirits
Hong Kong APAC 24 March 2023
Christie’s First Live Wine Auction in Hong Kong of 2023
Hong Kong – On 24 March, Christie’s Hong Kong hosted its first live wine auction of 2023 at Alexandra House – “Grands Crus Part III: Finest and Rarest Wines from the Cellar of Christen Sveaas” – which achieved a sale total of HK$30,274,000 / US$3,874,642. With Hong Kong’s social restrictions lifted, there was a lively atmosphere at Alexandra House as bidders in the room raised their paddles while enjoying food and drinks. In addition to in-person bidding, the sale received an avid response on the telephones and online. Participation from 10 countries spanning 4 continents made this live auction in Hong Kong a global event.
Adam Bilbey, Global Head of Wine and Spirits, Christie’s commented, “It was an honour to commence Christie’s 2023 live wine auctions in Hong Kong with a selection from Mr Sveaas’s stunning cellar – and a joy to welcome so many spirited bidders in person to our saleroom once again. The iconic bottles received a tremendous response from bidders in Asia and beyond, achieving remarkable prices – a testament to both Mr Sveaas’s superb taste and the demand for fine wine across the region. The results reaffirm Christie’s strength in presenting the world’s most important single-owner wine collections to the market.”
Michelle Chan, Head of Wine, Christie’s Asia Pacific added, “The enthusiastic participation in today’s auction in Hong Kong demonstrates the sustained appetite for fine wine in Asia. These outstanding results have provided an excellent base for our Hong Kong Spring Auctions this May, where we look forward to sharing an array of magnificent wine with the region’s connoisseurs.”
Christen Sveaas remarked, “This is the first time a selection of wine from my cherished collection has been presented at Christie’s in Asia, and it has been a pleasure to witness it be so well received. I am heartened to know that these special bottles have found new homes, and my wish is that their owners take great joy in savouring and sharing them.”
