Christie’s and HomeArt Are Proud to Announce FLESH AND SOUL: BACON/GHENIE To Touch Down in Seoul this September

South Korea – Building upon the phenomenal success of its inaugural display in Hong Kong this May, Christie’s and HomeArt are thrilled to announce that 【 Flesh and Soul: Bacon/Ghenie 】 will be exhibited at BOONTHESHOP Cheongdam, from 3 to 5 September, marking the first joint Francis Bacon and Adrian Ghenie exhibition in South Korea. Free to the public, this groundbreaking showcase offers a rare opportunity for audiences to view, side by side, a selection of museum quality masterpieces by the two iconic artists.
Coinciding with the debut of Frieze Seoul, and two major art fairs Kiaf SEOUL & Kiaf PLUS, the exhibition will headline Seoul’s Art Week in September. This initiative demonstrates Christie’s ongoing commitment to the art scene in South Korea and stems from our wider mission to share the joy of art appreciation with the world.
Hailed as one of the most important painters of the 20th century, Francis Bacon (1909 – 1992) was known for his unsettling imagery which focused on human forms that articulated violence, tension and turbulence, life’s glorious agony. His works are held in almost every major public collection around the world and are highly coveted by elite collectors, regularly achieving eight figures and more at international auctions.
Like Bacon a generation before, Adrian Ghenie (b. 1977) uses his art to address traumas of humanity, but with a preoccupation with mass sufferings and the forces of good and evil. His techniques of pouring, dripping and knifing are unorthodox, creating canvases that are rough and jagged, conveying darkness and torment, often with a cinematic feel. Internationally acclaimed, Ghenie’s works are held in the collections of Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, S.M.A.K., Ghent, the Long Museum, Shanghai, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.
The highlights of the【Flesh and Soul: Bacon/Ghenie】will be announced in early August.
