Hong Kong – On 30 November and 1 December, Christie’s Hong Kong staged a series of five 20th and 21st Century Art auctions – the “20th / 21st Century Art Evening Sale” and the thematic “Post-Millennium Evening Sale” on 30 November, “Marc Chagall, Colour of Life, Works Formerly From The Artist’s Estate (Part II)”, “20th Century Art Day Sale” and “21st Century Art Day Sale” on 1 December – achieving a combined sale total of HK$1,231,797,300 / US$158,430,073. Competitive bidding was witnessed across the auctions, with participants from 33 countries across 6 continents, with over 4,500,000 viewers on the livestreamed platforms.

The top lot of Christie’s Hong Kong Autumn Auctions, Untitled by American female artist Joan Mitchell, achieved HK$83,350,000 / US$10,720,227, and marked the first time the artist was presented at auction at Christie’s Asia. The evening sale series witnessed numerous world auction records for artists including Nicolas Party, Georgette Chen and Jonathan Gardner. Christie’s curation of the 20th / 21st Century Art sale series, underscores Hong Kong’s unique placement within the art world as a central hub bringing together art from the East and the West, which is reflected in the top lots of the Evening Sale.
The 20th / 21st Century Art sales continued on 1 December with three live day sales. “Marc Chagall, Colour of Life, Works Formerly From The Artist’s Estate (Part II)” continued the successes for the collection following Part I in London, achieving a total of HK$74,436,000 / US$9,573,735 and 192% hammer above low estimate, with 100% of the works sold. The 20th Century Day Sale realised a total of HK$146,842,200 / US$18,886,403, achieving 130% hammer over low estimate. Zao Wou-Ki’s 29.4.88 led the sale, realising HK$18,450,000 / US$2,372,984. The 21st Century Day Sale concluded the 20th / 21st Century Art live auctions, with a total of HK$192,680,100 / US$24,781,936, achieving 146% hammer above low estimate. Five paintings by Yayoi Kusama were sold, led by Window which fetched HK$20,850,000 / US$2,689,819, and was the top lot and over doubled its low estimate.
