American Art Totals $28,931,500 and Sets 6 Auction Records
New York— Christie’s American Art auction totaled $28,931,500 and was 85% sold by lot and 137% hammer sold above low estimate with half of all lots sold above high estimate. The sale was led by Arthur Dove’s Sunset which established a world auction record for the artist at $7,802,500, selling above the estimate of $2,000,000-3,000,000. Thomas Hart Benton’s Keith Farm, Chillmark sold for $4,830,000, achieving the second highest price for the artist.
Additional new world auction records were established for Paul Cadmus’ Lloyd and Barbara Wescott which sold for $2,430,000 above the estimate of $300,000-500,000; Walt Kuhn’s Chico in a Silk Hat ($1,590,000); George Copeland Ault’s The Plough and the Moon ($687,500); Wolf Kahn’s Atlantic Highlands ($212,500); and Ida Ten Eyck O'Keeffe’s Roots ($13,750).
