A CENTURY OF ART: PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE GERALD FINEBERG COLLECTION

ONLINE | 19 SEPTEMBER – 3 OCTOBER
New York Americas 29 September 2023
A CENTURY OF ART: PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE GERALD FINEBERG COLLECTION
NAN GOLDIN (B. 1953) CZ and Max on the beach, Truro, MA, 1976 Cibachrome print, flush-mounted on board Estimate: $10,000-15,000 M

New York – Christie’s presents: A Century of Art: Photographs from The Gerald Fineberg Collection, an online sale open for bidding 19 September through 3 October. The installment continues a series of sales for The Gerald Fineberg Collection which to date achieved $211 Million
The collection comprises a diverse and intricately detailed array of photographs, including Anna Atkins and Julia Margaret Cameron to Nan Goldin and William Eggleston. A strong showing of women photographers is one of the key thematic threads of the collection. The top lot of the sale is a portrait by August Sander of Anton Räderscheidt, painter and central figure of the New Objectivity movement which flourished in 1920’s Germany. Sander and Räderscheidt, both served in World War I together and were deeply affected by the experience. Upon returning home, both focused on their art. The photograph will be offered in the sale with an estimate of $70,000-90,000.

Rebecca Jones, AVP, Specialist, Head of Sale, Photographs says: “The Fineberg collection of photographs is sophisticated, including important works from some of the leaders of the medium, but also wonderfully idiosyncratic; there are images and even artists rarely seen at auction, yet deserving of more recognition. Following suit with the larger collection of which it is part, Gerald Fineberg’s photographs demonstrate his thoughtful, inquisitive and daring approach to collecting.”

Additional highlights include vintage prints by acclaimed 20th century artists such as Man Ray, Brassaï and Paul Outerbridge, Jr, a substantial group of Nan Goldin images, including some rarely seen early images and several cyanotypes by Atkins.
