Christie’s Prints & Multiples Season Highlighted by Global Competition forAndy Warhol Prints

London – The demand for Andy Warhol prints witnessed in the Prints & Multiples Online Sale at Christie’s underscores the continued global appeal for works by the artist across all prince points. Mick Jagger, 1975, sold for £151,200, more than triple its high estimate of £50,000 and Paramount, from: Ads, 1985, exceeded pre-sale expectations with competition pushing the price to £81,900; both prints achieved world auction record prices for subject matter by Warhol.  Two editions depicting Chairman Mao performed well against their high estimates, Mao, 1972, selling for £75,600 and Mao, 1972, selling for £47,880. There were also 8 editions of Warhol’s Electric Chair series that all sold above their low estimates. Further highlights yielded strong results with Warhol’s Oyster Stew, from: Campbell's Soup II, 1969, selling for £35,280 and an iconic depiction of Elizabeth Taylor, Liz, 1964 selling for £44,100, more than double its low estimate.

The Prints & Multiples March Season realised a combined total of £4,779,810 /  $6,262,715 / €5,689,138. The Prints & Multiples Online Sale was led by James Ensor’s L'entree Du Christ A Bruxelles Le Mardi Gras En 1889, 1898, which achieved a world auction record price for any work by the artist (£239,400).

In addition to the exceptional results for Any Warhol, further Pop Art highlights included Roy Lichtenstein’s Forms in Space, 1985, selling for more than double the pre-sale estimate (£113,400). David Hockney's Paper Pools sold for £69,300, a record for this subject matter by the artist.

Works by modern masters, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Marc Chagall also performed strongly. Highlights include Picasso’s Femme au Corsage à Fleurs, 1958, which sold for £94,500, against a low estimate of £50,000, Marc Chagall’s Les Amoureux de la Tour Eiffel, 1960 (£27,720) and Joan Miró’s Le Chasseur de Pieuvres, 1969 (£13,860).

As part of the Prints & Multiples March 2022 season in London, ‘Laugh now but one day we’ll be in charge: Banksy and 21st Century Editions’ Online Sale closed on 15 March 2022, and realised a total of: £2,615,886, selling 90% by lot.

Strong prices were achieved for Banksy’s Banksquiat (Grey), 2019, selling for £163,800, more than double the pre-sale estimate and achieved a world record for the subject and Choose your Weapon (VIP Gold) (£239,400), the first time the gold colourway of this edition had been available at auction. Stik’s Lovers (Yellow), 2011, achieved £56,700 and was a world record for a screenprint by the artist. Further notable results included Grayson Perry’s Map of Days, 2013, (£63,000) while Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkin 2000 (Yellow), 2000 and Pumpkin 2000 (Red), 2000 realised prices of £47,880 and £40,320 respectively.
